Studies of bottom sediments of the Paranoa Lake (D.F., Brazil) are very important to the knowledge of local environmental conditions because this lake is used for recreation and as preservation area. Besides, it is of great importance to evaluate the potential risk this compartment represents for the aquatic food chain. Modifications of the local environment can induce remobilisation of pollutants present in sediments. This work investigated the distribution of the trace (Sr, V, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ba, Zn, Hg) and major elements (Ca, Mg, Fe e Al) in bottom sediments of the Paranoa Lake and discuss their potential sources, from natural origin or coming from human activities. During the rainy season, 41 sediments samples were collected in the lake and 13 in its tributaries, close to their mouth. All elements were analysed in the fine fraction ( 2) for the Cr, Zn, Ba, Hg and Cu were observed, which indicate a moderate contamination risk, and in two samples, an important contamination risk compared to the natural sources was found. RESUMO O estudo dos sedimentos no Lago Paranoa (DF - Brasil) e importante tanto para o conhecimento das condicoes do ambiente local, em funcao da utilizacao como area de lazer e preservacao ambiental, quanto para manter informacoes atualizadas sobre o risco potencial que o mesmo pode representar para os organismos aquaticos, uma vez que poluentes incorporados aos sedimentos podem ser remobilizados por alteracoes do meio circundante. Neste trabalho estudou-se a distribuicao dos elementos-traco (Sr, V, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ba, Zn, Hg,) e dos elementos maiores (Ca, Mg, Fe, Al) em sedimentos do Lago Paranoa para identificar as provaveis fontes naturais e de origem antropica de cada elemento. As amostras de sedimento de fundo foram coletadas durante a epoca chuvosa totalizando 41 pontos de amostragem no Lago Paranoa e 13 nos tributarios. Os elementos foram determinados na fracao fina (<45 mm). Para a determinacao do Ca, Mg, Fe, Al, Sr, V, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ba e Zn utilizouse o ICP/AES, e para o Hg o AAS com geracao de vapor frio.
