Resumo

We have successfully treated with heparin a patient who had hypofibrinogenemia associated with the retention of a dead fetus without the use of either whole blood or fibrinogen. This success and her clotting studies provide strong evidence that the hypofibrinogenemia was due to disseminated intravascular coagulation with depletion of multiple clotting factors. The theoretical implications are discussed and our recommendations for the prevention and management of the hemostatic disorder are presented.
