Leukoplakia is uncommon. It occurs twice as often in the bladder as in the pelvis and ureter and it is associated with and perhaps caused by chronic infection. Carcinoma is present in 10 to 20 per cent of the cases at diagnosis. We believe that leukoplakia is not simple squamous metaplasia but a step further down the line—a process that evolved through squamous metaplasia and perhaps could result in cancer. We think leukoplakia is potentially pre-malignant and it should be treated as a low grade and low stage tumor since no satisfactory treatment exists. © 1975 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited by (2018) EDITORIAL COMMENTJournal of Urology, VOL. 161, NO. 4, (1109-1109), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1999.Roehrborn C, Teigland C and Spence H (2018) Progression of Leukoplakia of the Bladder to Squamous Cell Carcinoma 19 Years After Complete Urinary DiversionJournal of Urology, VOL. 140, NO. 3, (603-604), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1988.Mueller S, Thueroff J and Rumpelt H (2018) Urothelial Leukoplakia: New Aspects of Etiology and TherapyJournal of Urology, VOL. 137, NO. 5, (979-983), Online publication date: 1-May-1987.Benson R, Swanson S and Farrow G (2018) Relationship of Leukoplakia to Urothelial MalignancyJournal of Urology, VOL. 131, NO. 3, (507-511), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1984.Lizza E, Elyaderani M, Foshag L, Boyd C and Belis J (2018) Chronic Fistula Developing 2 Years after Nephrectomy for PyonephrosisJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 4, (792-795), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1983.Hertle L and Androulakakis P (2018) Keratinizing Desquamative Squamous Metaplasia of the Upper Urinary Tract: Leukoplakia—CholesteatomaJournal of Urology, VOL. 127, NO. 4, (631-635), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1982.Droller M (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 125, NO. 2, (197-197), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1981.Broecker B, Klein F and Hackler R (2018) Cancer of the Bladder in Spinal Cord Injury PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 125, NO. 2, (196-197), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1981.Kaufman J, Fam B, Jacobs S, Gabilondo F, Yalla S, Kane J and Rossier A (2018) Bladder Cancer and Squamous Metaplasia in Spinal Cord Injury PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 118, NO. 6, (967-971), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1977.Murphy W (2018) Falsely Positive Urinary Cytology: Pathologist's Error or Preclinical Cancer?Journal of Urology, VOL. 118, NO. 5, (811-813), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1977.
