ResumoRural tourism is set up as one of the non-agricultural activities that grow more in the Brazilian rural environment, representing an impetus for local development, having important participation in the generation of employment and income. This article presents a brief contextualization of tourism as a non-agricultural activity, addresses some aspects of supply and demand and presents the experience of the local development of rural tourism in the municipality of Sao Martinho. Located in the south of the state of Santa Catarina, St. Martin was stagnated, having its economy based on agriculture. From 1993, a process of incentive and encouragement to tourism activity with important participation of rural families was initiated, revitalizing the municipal economy
