This article tries to analyse the concepts and processes of laicization andsecularization. With this objective we examined the difference existent between this processes, emphasizing that both appear with modernity and express a civilizational project, a conception of the world that seeks to build a social order based in secular values. We also distinguish the laicity from laicism, demonstrating that the last is a violent way of laicity that tries to extirpate religion from social life. The laicism reveals itself as an anticlerical and antireligious ideology. We conclude that laicity is a phenomenum which needs to be placed and understood according to the historical and cultural characteristics of each nation.
