J. Watson,5 Turner,2, 6 and many others.4, 9, 21, 34The first description of the disease was made by Hoppe-Selye7in 1871. He discovered that the addition of a strong sulfuric acid to hemoglobin produced a substance with a characteristic absorption spectrum which he called "hematoporphyrin." It was discovered later that this was not the substance excreted in the urine and feces of patients who had porphyria. This...Bibliography1.
