Despite many studies, there still remain considerable doubt and lack of specific knowledge concerning many aspects of this complication. The very diagnosis itself presents a problem, in view of the absence of pathognomonic symptoms, signs or laboratory findings,1as well as the lack of any specific pathologic picture.2Agreement has, however, been expressed in the literature by many authorities concerning the background for the development of diabetic neuropathy.
