Resumo: O trabalho discute o conceito de “inclassificável”, tomando como ponto de partida os significados da palavra grega “atopia” e os apontamentos teóricos de Barthes sobre a noção de atopos. Como desdobramento dessa discussão, são evocados Borges, Perec e Peter Greenaway para a abordagem do problema da insuficiência e precariedade dos sistemas de classificação no mundo contemporâneo. Discute-se ainda a figura híbrida do ornitorrinco como representante por excelência do inclassificável. A partir das reflexões de Umberto Eco sobre o ornitorrinco, conclui-se que o modelo contemporâneo de enciclopédia – em sua dimensão hipertextual – é o mais adequado para uma era inclassificável como a do presente, na qual as fronteiras entre culturas, línguas, gêneros, artes e campos disciplinares se entrecruzam, abrindo- se cada vez mais ao híbrido e ao transdisciplinar.Palavras-chave: atopia; enciclopédia; classificação; ubiqüidade.Abstract: This paper discusses the concept of the “unclassifiable”, starting from the meanings of the Greek word atopia, together with Barthes’s theoretical notes on the notion of atopos. Unfolding this discussion, the article evokes Borges, Perec and Peter Greenaway to approach the problem of insufficiency and precariousness in the systems of classification and discusses the hybrid figure of the platypus as representative par excellence of the unclassifiable. Based on the Umberto Eco’s reflections about such animal, I conclude that the contemporary model of encyclopaedia – in its hypertextual dimension – reveals itself as the most suitable one to include the platypus, as well as the most coherent with an unclassifiable era as the present, when the borders between cultures, languages, genres, arts, and disciplinary fields intercross and open more and more to the hybrid and transdisciplinary.Keywords: atopia; encyclopaedia; classification; ubiquity.
