Resumo

The presence of oxygen in the freezing medium was found to affect freezing damage. A reduced survival and an increased radiation sensitivity were found in Escherichia coli Bs-1 frozen from oxygen-saturated solutions. E. coli B/r did not show these effects. These results are consistent with a theory that oxygen effects are mediated by free radical reactions. It is suggested that the oxygen content of freezing media may be a significant variable in cryobiology.
