ResumoThe article explores the history of the pulpit from the church Sant'Andrea designed by artist Giovanni Pisano in Pistoia, Italy. The author reflects on the pulpit's description in a revised edition of the book “Le Vite de'piu eccellenti pittori scultori e architettori nelle redazioni del 1550 e 1568” by historian Giorgio Vasari. Emphasis is given an analysis of the historical accuracy of Vasari's account and the role of institutional competition in the commission and construction of the pulpit. Other topics include the local authority of Franciscans and relations with the bishopric, sculptural imagery, and the iconography of salvation.
