Resumo

This paper discusses policies for assessing the equivalence of PhD and SJD degrees studied overseas. Th erefore, the analisys is divided into four parts. First, we present some central aspects of the Brazilian system, used to evaluate diplomas obtained abroad. Second, the evolution of PhD in Argentina, off ered by some institutions well recognized and by others institutions non-recognized. Th ird, the characteristics of courses that served as source of inspiration for the Brazilian system, as France and Germany. Fourth, we off er some arguments on the discussion about the validation of diplomas obtained in a diff erent legal education system, as the US SJD’s.
