In properly standardized dosage they have come to be accepted as useful oxytocics when administered after expression of the placenta; they promote uterine involution and prevent postpartum bleeding and puerperal sepsis. Since isolation of the crystalline alkaloid, ergotamine, described by Spiro and Stoll1in 1921, numerous clinical entities have been treated by the specific ergot alkaloids. At one time in the past decade, approximately 80 medical disorders of one kind or another were enthusiastically treated with ergotamine tartrate. Peptic ulcer, migraine, pruritus, diabetes mellitus and insipidus, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, various hemorrhagic...References1.
