ResumoThe possible mechanisms whereby an abnormal immunological response in liver disease might result in hyperglobulinæmia are examined. It is concluded that present evidence favours the view that defective sequestration of a wide variety of antigens by the Kupffer cells of the liver or their abnormal release contribute to the hyperglobulinæmia, and that a similar disturbance of reticuloendothelial function may be operative in other collagen disorders. Hyperglobulinæmia may be most pronounced in diseases such as chronic active hepatitis, where excessive antigenic stimulation could result in B-cell overaction in the presence of a defect in T-cell function.
