Resumo

One of the major goals of Healthy People 2010 was to considerably decrease the preterm birth rate from 11.6% in 1998 to 7.6% by the year 2010. Nevertheless, the preterm birth rate went up to 12.5% in 2004, higher than the rate in 1998. As birth rates for premature infants increase, a large number of late preterm infants (LPI) are grouped together with term infants and are treated and managed the same ( 1 Engle W.A. A recommendation for the definition of "late preterm" (near-term) and the birth weight-gestational age classification system. Seminars in Perinatology. 2006; 30: 2-7 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (162) Google Scholar ). Engle further emphasized that LPIs cannot and should not be treated as equal to their term infant counterparts.
