Resumo

We carried out a preliminary study of community structure of the genus Eleutherodactylus in a cloud forest at 1850-2000 m on the Western Cordillera of Colombia (Departamento del Valle del Cauca). The study was carried out between February and August 1995. We captured 220 individuals representing eight species; three of the species represented 75 % of all captured individuals. We evaluated two of three ecological parameters that act as competition regulation mechanisms in resource partitioning among species of a community: microhabitat utilization and temporal activity. Minimal differences were found in hours of activity; most species are mainly active at night, with the exception of Eleutherodactylus mantipus and E. thectopternus which are both diurnal and nocturnal; young individuals of the latter species were found active during the day. Microhabitat utilization separates two groups: five species were found mainly on bushes, and the remaining three were found on the ground.
