Prognosis in this situation is usually dependent upon the extent of the antecedent liver disease and upon the severity of the additional acute hepatocellular injury produced by the bleeding episode. The latter factor is in turn dependent upon the efficacy of the measures taken to control the bleeding and counteract shock, and upon the etiology of the source of the bleeding.
