Resumo

This article reviews scholarship on the nature and implications of the law–science relationship. Four major themes are identified: first, how the two institutions are thought to shape the authority structures and practices of modernity; second, how law affects the emergence and professionalization of scientific and technical disciplines; third, the role of expert witnesses and rules governing the admissibility of expert testimony; and fourth, how law functions as a site for generating new scientific knowledge and technical expertise.
