ResumoThe English classics are interesting resources to use in the language classroom, considering their importance to personal formation, as well as to the understanding of the target language and culture. Thus, aiming at being a referential work for future teachers of English, this is a critical reading of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. The focus of this study is on the social critique that Swift creates through satire. It is possible to notice that the English writer constructs a critique that crosses temporal boundaries and allows us to think about many aspects of current societies. Thus, the purpose of this study is to work with the classic work by Swift as a cultural experience of reading, and reflect on aspects of a language and its speakers.
