ResumoThe fluid dynamical model of Gull (1973a, b) predicts that the radio emission of young supernova remnants occurs in instabilities at the boundary between the ejected mass and the 'swept-up' interstellar medium, and that no central energy source is necessary. High resolution radio observations of the thickness, polarization properties and structure of the shells of such objects provide a test for these theories, and also enable an upper limit to be set on the flux from point sources within the shell which could be supplying it with energy.
