ResumoThis work report an outbreak of food poisoning which occured in March, 1994, in the city of Santa Barbara D'Oeste, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The food involved was an icingcovered and custard-filled cake, contamined by Staphylococcus aureus at a leveI of 2,9 x 109UFC/g. Based on the epidemiologic investigation and high contamination it was conc1uded that Staphylococcus aureus was the pathogen responsible for the outbreak. The possible factors which contributed to the occurrence of the outbreak, poor hygienic practices of foodhandlers and holding of food at room temperature, will be discussed.
