ResumoThis essay addresses Balzac's modern drama of detection by focusing on the body under surveillance as semioticized in Théorie de la démarche, Physiologie du mariage , and Ferragus . These works forged an urban myth of passion, centered on the seduction of the female passing body, which encompasses a new configuration of experience. This inquiry is framed by an exploration of the conjunction of bodies in pain and femininity in Ferragus and Le Lys dans la vallée , uncovering the finitude of the female body as an allegory of writing, modernity and memory.
