ResumoGoal-directed point-of-care ultrasound has the potential to improve routine patient care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In this chapter, the authors describe general considerations for a neonatal ICU point-of-care ultrasound program, including considerations of training and supervision, technical considerations, and specific patient considerations in the NICU. Common clinical practice applications including neonatal head ultrasound, ultrasound for umbilical venous catheter placement, and ultrasound for evaluation and aspiration of pericardial and pleural effusions are described. Evidence supporting the role of bedside ultrasound in these goal-directed clinical applications in the NICU is reviewed and discussed, with discussion of the pitfalls and benefits possible with rapid application of ultrasound for urgent clinical problems.
