In this country one frequently speaks alternately of the Paul-Bunnell test; and in Europe it is often referred to as the Hanganutziu-Deicher reaction. In 1911 Forssman1recognized the nonspecificity of certain antigen-antibody reactions. The terms "heterogenetic," "heterophilic," or "heterophile" are applied to those antibodies that react with an antigen (sheep erythrocytes) which seemingly had nothing to do with their development. One type of heterophile antibody is known as the Forssman antibody, but there are other varieties...Bibliography1.
