ResumoThis essay focuses on travel literature, about Brazil, written during the 16th, 17 th and 18th centuries in order to extract examples of the image that Europeans had constructed, of one of the features that, in their eyes, stood out most among the local population: rampant and festive religiosity. It is therefore a very limited attempt to map a small part of these truths about Brazil and its people, which the inhabitants of the Old World built and shared over the centuries; “truths” that largely guided their actions in this part of the globe.
