Resumo

At the age of 14, Jose Vianna da Motta went to Berlin to study with Xaver Scharwenka. One year later, in September 1883, he began to keep a diary, which he maintained for ten years. Generally, the observations recorded are short and very seldom include any mention of the sentiments of the author. Events are described objectively, without being commented upon. Vianna da Motta used the diary as a justification of how he had spent every hour of the day. His diary reflects the struggle between his Wish and his Duty, and in this struggle Duty always had the upper hand.
