ResumoThis paper shows that most studies on housing are carried out in the context of consumption, by dimensioning and qualifying it. The State and public policies play a central role in these studies. Although they provide an important picture of the lack of housing, territorial segregation, social exclusion, and institutional policies, they often ignore the central role played by production in defining the constructed environment. In particular, attention is drawn to the academic production on architecture and urbanism that ignores construction and the technology production that ignores labor. These features are at the very roots of Brazilian society – disdain for work, and a gap between discourse and practice. It is imperative to change the theoretical framework of housing research.
