Resumo

The study on vertical distribution of epiphytic orchids on trees from floodplain forests of the Amazon is still incipient. This research aimed to determine the vertical distribution of epiphytic orchids and their respective phorophytes. The study was carried out in 2.85ha of floodplain forest in the Environmental Protection Area (EPA) Combu Island, Belem, Para, in 114 transects of 50m x 5m, on which all phorophytes with DBH ≥ 20cm were measured. Epiphytic orchids were recorded by observation with binoculars (Tasco - 10mm x 25mm) and by climbing phorophytes. The relative frequencies and percentages were calculated for phorophyte and phorophyte segments. We recorded 37 species of orchids with emphasis on Epidendrum L. and Maxillaria Ruiz & Pav. which richness in species and Scaphyglottis sickie Pabst and Dimerandra emarginata (G. Mey.) Hoehne in value importance epiphytic, which preferential stratum occupation was the canopy. We identified 48 species of phorophytes, among which Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex A. Juss. ) Mull. Arg and Carapa guianensis Aubl. showed high abundance and richness of epiphytic orchids. This research revealed the need for additional studies to description and generalization of occurrence patterns in the floodplain forests, as well as in others vegetation types from northern Brazil.
