Galen3described symptoms that point to an "abscess or a phlegmonous or erysipelatous tumor of the stomach." Several physicians of the Middle Ages, for instance Avicenna,1Balescon de Tarente,1Piso,1and others, dealt with this subject. The first case report was written in 1594 by Forestus.1His diagnosis was made clinically. Since the patient recovered, we have no proof that the diagnosis was correct.
