Resumo

Radiological surveys along the CSX Transportation Group railroad tracks in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, have found areas of {sup 137}Cs contamination, which probably resulted from the 1960s' low-level waste operations. This paper summarizes an assessment of potential radiation doses to the public, including railroad workers, from exposure to {sup 137}Cs. The significance of the contamination and the need for remediation are evaluated by comparing the dose estimates and survey data with proposed guidelines for limiting exposures of the public. The paper discusses the following topics: description of contamination; proposed guidelines for contamination; dose estimates and analysis of survey data; and conclusions.
