Felty1 described a syndrome of mild rheumatoid arthritis associated with fever, secondary anemia (in four of five cases reported), leukopenia ranging from 1,000 to 4,200 leukocytes, splenomegaly and tachycardia. Rheumatologists are practically unanimous in believing that this syndrome is a variant of rheumatoid arthritis.Forty-six papers1-46have been published on the value of splenectomy in rheumatoid arthritis; 37 patients have been described in these papers as having undergone splenectomy successfully. The effects of splenectomy in these cases...Bibliography1. Felty AR: Chronic arthritis in the adult, associated with splenomegaly and leucopenia, Bull. Johns Hopkins Hosp. 35: 16, 1924.
