ResumoZeolites (ZSM-5, boralites, offretite, HY, mordenite and omega) were bonded with 20 wt.% sepiolite into composite catalysts to oligomerize propylene in a fixed-bed, automated isothermal pilot unit operating at 30–50 atm. Product distributions indicate that oligomer size and structure correlate well with zeolite pore diameter. Aromatics and branched saturates are formed in addition to C6-C12 and higher oligomers, indicating the presence of cracking, hydrogen and methyl transfer, isomerization and dehydrocyclization reactions. Omega zeolite generates liquid products containing 13.9% aromatics at high (96.7%) propylene conversion; offretite (and HY) minimize C7 and C8 formation. The boralite employed yields less branched liquid products than either ZSM-5 or the other zeolites tested.
