O artigo discute a relacao entre educacao e pobreza consignada nas proclamadas diretrizes educacionais para o novo milenio. O exame dos documentos resultantes dos sucessivos foruns internacionais promovidos com apoio do Banco Mundial demonstra que a educacao e sistematicamente elencada como fator por excelencia de erradicacao (ou alivio) da pobreza. Ao mesmo tempo, o Banco urge que reformas sejam executadas pelos mesmos paises assolados pela pobreza, as quais aprofundam o projeto de mercantilizacao da educacao e de aligeiramento dos conteudos do ensino em todos os niveis. Conclui-se que a relacao tracada entre educacao e pobreza traduz uma retorica mistificadora, representando um instrumento de ajuste ao projeto de reproducao do capital, diante do agravamento das dificuldades de acumulacao do lucro postas pela crise estrutural contemporânea. Eradicating poverty and reproducing the capital: critical notes to the education for the new millennium Abstract The article discusses the relationship between education and poverty within the realm of the proclaimed educational directions for the new millennium. The exam of a number of reports relative to the successive international forums promoted under the auspices of the World Bank indicated that education is systematically referred to as the main tool to eradicate (or alleviate) poverty. At the same time, the nations facing hanger and poverty are urged by that Organization to launch reforms which put education in market’s domain, and diminish the scope of academic knowledge at all levels. It is thus concluded that the relationship presently laid down between education and the eradication of poverty operates as a mystification of objective reality, serving capital’s demands in the context of its structural crisis.
