ResumoAbstract The Beck Depression Inventory ( BDI ) is a 21‐item self‐report assessment of the intensity of depression for use in both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric clinical populations. First created by the psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck in 1961, the BDI is now in its third iteration ( BDI‐II ) and remains one of the most widely used tests of the severity of depression. The BDI‐II has been tested extensively for convergent and discriminant (construct) validities, concurrent validity, and factorial validity, and it has been translated into over 20 languages. Short forms of the BDI have been constructed for use in screening for major depressive disorders in nonpsychiatric clinical populations and for use with children and adolescents. The BDI is not a tool for diagnosing depression but rather is an assessment of the intensity or severity of depressive symptoms.
