Resumo

Acute sleep deprivation in humans is defined as wakefulness that is extended as compared with normal (usually understood as 16 h) without naps or other sleep periods. It is well known that acute sleep deprivation produces changes in mood such as increased sleepiness, fatigue, and confusion; poor performance on many tasks; and increased likelihood of falling asleep when sedentary. Current research has also shown, however, that the effects of sleep loss may be mediated by a number of factors ranging from activity levels to medications to genetic composition.
