Resumo

OF THE SOCIEDADE BRASILEIRA DE QUÍMICA (SBQ).This article highlights the history of the formation of the Sociedade Brasileira de Química (SBQ) and its consolidation as a scientific society representative of the Brazilian community of chemists.Among other topics, we briefly comment on the origin of the SBQ from other Brazilian chemical associations; the creation of the SBQ periodicals (Química Nova , Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society, Boletim Informativo, and Química Nova na Escola); the realization of SBQ annual meetings firstly within the Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC) and thereafter (1990) in Caxambu (MG); the establishment of regional secretaries and divisions; the formation of links with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and other international scientific organizations; and the affiliation of undergraduate students and Chemistry high school teachers with the SBQ.
