Resumo

This review is organized in terms of the main steps and topics characterizing all trace analysis: sample pretreatment and dissolution, solution stability, preconcentration, isolation and determination. The options now existing in each step have been presented, but no attempt is made to mention every investigation in which each has been used. It is hoped that this treatment will make it easier for the analyst to assemble a procedure suited to the needs of a particular case. Pretreatment and Dissolution of the Sample If total arsenic is to be determined, the sample must be mineralized at least to the degree necessary to convert all arsenic present to inorganic forms. The treatment chosen should be the mildest treatment which will accomplish this conversion, so that losses and contamination will be minimized. Several approaches are possible: 1. Wet Ashing. According to Portmann and Riley1, prolonged digestion with nitric acid, followed by evaporation to
