ResumoGenotoxicity of the air in an urban area in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil). The metropolitan region of Porto Alegre concentrates 36% of the Rio Grande do Sul population, characterized by the presence of industries and the intense traffic of motor vehicles. Sapucaia do Sul, a municipality in this region, has a fleet which equates to about one vehicle for every two inhabitants, and its economic base includes construction industry, leather industry, metallurgy and steel mill. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the genotoxicity of the air in Sapucaia do Sul, using the Tradescantia pallida var. purpurea bioassay. Cuttings with inflorescences were periodically exposed to a sampling point in the urban center, from December 2011 to November 2012, in addition to exposure indoors (negative control). Frequencies of micronuclei (MCN) were determined in young tetrads of pollen mother cells and expressed as MCN/100 tetrads. Climatic data were recorded during exposures. The MCN frequencies observed in the flower buds exposed to the sample point were significantly higher than those of the negative controls during the twelve samplings and ranged from 4.77 (October 2012) to 8.28 (July 2012), being equivalent to an increase of 146% and 217% compared to their respective controls. No relationship of the MCN frequency with temperature, relative air humidity and precipitation during the periods of exposure was observed. The results obtained indicated that the T. pallida var. purpurea bioassay can be expanded to other municipalities in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre to allow the identification of genotoxic risk areas, considering the regional climatic conditions.
