Environmental and Social Impact Assessments

This paper discusses the application of the Barometer of Sustainability (BS) in the Jurumirim Hydrographic Basin (BJ), a watershed 70 km2 large, located in Angra dos Reis county, state of Rio de Janeiro. The main goal was to aggregate sustainable development indicators, to evaluate the position of a place in relation to sustainability reference goals, considering the ecological and human dimensions. BS has been created under the seal of IUCN; it congregates individual sustainability pointers in thematic and dimensional indices, defining ‘performance scales’ for each pointer, in an objective and reproducible way. BS made possible to evaluate that BJ fits an intermediate situation in relation to the sustainable development. It performs better in the environmental subjects than in the socio-economic ones, being closer to the environment conservation than to the social equity and the economic growth.
