Although the nineteenth century was the great age of the celebrity inventor, Ottmar Mergenthaler, the creator of the Linotype, has never received the at-tention lavished upon Thomas Edison or Alexander Graham Bell, either during his lifetime or afterward. It could be argued, however, that his contribution was nearly as great.
