Abstract The effect of a (prior) chemical reaction step on the course of an electrode reaction is described and it is found that potentiostatic experiments are very suitable for the analysis of the process. The application of the method to the system [Cd(CN) 4 ] 2 ↰ [Cd(CN) 3 ] − + CN − is described. The results give an insight into the difficulties involved in the interpretation of rate constants which are obtained in this manner.
