ResumoThe article addresses the role of certification in agricultural development. For that, an assessment of environmental impacts of certification under the European Retailers Produce Working Group - Good Agricultural Practices (EurepGap) was carried out in rural establishments dedicated to the pineapple production in Guaracai, Sao Paulo State (Brazil), a leading producing region in the country. EurepGap is a certification procedure based on Good Agricultural Practices, with voluntary participation, that intends to meet the consumers interests, in terms of food safety, animal welfare, environmental protection and health, and workers safety and welfare.
