ResumoSimple cells, broken cells and dendrites are distinguished and the conditions under which they occur are described for aluminium base alloys with copper 0.2 to 10 wt% Cu. The ripening of simple cells behind the growth front is described with particular reference to (a) mechanisms of ripening, (b) changes in scale of solute distribution and (c) the effects of orientation. It is concluded that previous measurements of cell dimensions on sections or from decanted interfaces, relate not to the actual growth front but to a post solidification re-arrangement. Changes in secondary arm spacings were followed for broken cellular and dendritic morphologies. It was observed that while broken cells coarsened by a ripening mechanism similar to that for simple cells, dendrites coarsen in an essentially different pattern with only small changes in secondary arm spacings.
