ResumoIt has always seemed clear to me that a course in the novel ought to include the making of prose fiction as well as the study or analysis of the finished product. Until last year, however, I never took the time and trouble to test my intuition. When I did, the test produced a remarkable result. Not only did the students become better readers, an outcome that was gratifying and expected-they also improved as writers of expository prose. In this essay, I will describe the experiment and its results, and I will try to account for the results.
