Resumo

This work aims mainly to study the behavior of the exchange rate from the floating of the Brazilian currency in 1999 - when Brazil adopted a floating exchange rate regime. It is analyzed through the model of purchasing power parity, is actually the Brazilian currency has appreciated or depreciated in the nine years considered and that this dimension occurred. After comparing the exchange rate actually charged and the exchange rate parity between 1999 and 2007, there is the influence of exchange rate on the Brazilian trade balance. The exchange is characterized as an essential element for trade between countries and their appreciation or depreciation is a cause for reduction or increase in competitiveness between countries. In the eyes of foreign trade, this (real overvalued or depreciated) penalizing some sectors of the economy and brings benefits to others. Finally, we conclude that the parity value, based on the month of January 1999, eventually settling at around R$ 2.16. At the same time, the work showed that yes there is a correlation between the exchange rate and trade balance of a country, although it is not the only factor to influence their external trade and, sometimes, does not assume a decisive character.
