En este articulo se hace una aproximacion a las condiciones del encarcelamiento en Espana. Primero se procede a plantear algunas dificultades propias de este tipo de investigaciones, para mas tarde presentar una serie de datos cuantitativos orientados a contextualizar la situacion. Dentro de la constante expansion del sistema carcelario, se tratan algunos aspectos basicos del encierro, principalmente a traves de los informes remitidos por el Defensor del Pueblo y por el Comite para la Prevencion de la Tortura a las autoridades espanolas. Se revisan las condiciones materiales, el tratamiento, la asistencia sanitaria, el problema de las drogas, el de la salud mental, los malos tratos y la situacion de los extranjeros y de las mujeres en prision.This paper explores imprisonment conditions in Spain. Some initial reflections on the difficulties found in this kind of research are followed by the citation of quantitative data, which serves to contextualize the current situation. Relying largely on reports sent to Spanish authorities by the Ombudsman and the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, some basic aspects of confinement are discussed in the context of the constant expansion of the prison system. Material, treatment, health assistance, drug and mental health issues, mistreatments and the conditions of foreigners and women are reviewed.
