ResumoThis article discusses the social representations of “black mother” that are expressed mainly on newspapers and testimonies of black activists. Following this approach it was possible to enlighten the construction process of a female symbol which was related to the function of black woman as wet-nurse. This symbol is also connected to the analysis of black social and cultural experiences and it is remembered during historical commemoratives dates that took place in the centre of Sao Paulo’s city all over the 20th century.
