Resumo

The journals were used as a weapon during the Peninsular War (1808-1814).In Andalusia, several afrancesados newspapers were edited in the cities occupied by the French invaders; in these publications the European policy and main actions of Napoleon Bonaparte were extracted. At the same time, in Cadiz -one of the few free areas in the Peninsula-some patriotic journals began their life, reflecting the social situation of the city and some information about the politic performance of Napoleon, which was strongly criticized in their pages. In those articles the Emperor' s wedding with Maria Luisa of Austria was one of the more addressed issues. The marriage was considered by the afrancesados journals a proof and a chance for the French expansion in Europe. However, this union symbolized for the patriotic ones the beginning of the debacle, because it enhanced the problems with Russia and other territories. In this paper we review the texts related to this matrimonial and political alliance.
