ResumoGreen and senescent leaves of R.mangle, A.schaueriana and L.racemosa, collected in mangrove areas of Sepetiba and Guanabara bays, were analysed for their organic carbon, total nitrogen and total aliphatics contents. Mean C:N ratios of green (30.1 ± 7.2) and senescent (56.5 ± 12.4) leaves indicated retranslocation of N during decaying of leaves. The differences in aliphatic hydrocarbon concentration (range of 239.7 to 2147.8 µg g -1 ), as well as the source diagnostic ratios among selected n-alkanes, were consistent with physiological characteristics of the trees. In addition, the alkylated chain length (ACL) index seemed a potential tool in biogeochemical and paleoceanographic studies.
