ResumoWithin the beta-subclass of Proteobacteria, members of the genera Bordetella, Achromobacter and Alcaligenes form a group of closely related organisms (Fig. 1). To date, seven Bordetella species are described, all of which are gram-negative, strictly aerobic coccobacilli with a nonfermentative, asaccharolytic metabolism. They occur exclusively in close association with man or warm-blooded animals.
