Resumo

This paper is part of a larger research project aiming at describing the textual and discourse competence of a group of chilean students, and is focused on the notion of textual competence and discourse competence. The former is seen as the higher level of constructional (or grammatical) competence, and consists of the mastery of the mechanisms of cohesion, progression and connection. The second is seen as the capacity to use texts in a communication event, and consists of the mastery of, at least, a situational, a modal, an illocutionnary, an inferential and an intertextual competence.
